Home Hemodialysis at Home, on Your Schedule

Home hemodialysis (HHD) is dialysis with a machine, done in your house, on a schedule you set with your care team. It is the other home option at Sundance besides peritoneal dialysis (PD).

Sundance Home Dialysis is an independent, home-only program in Hurst. We are not a national chain. If you need dialysis and you want your weeks to look like your weeks, not a clinic's, HHD is worth a conversation. Call 817-840-5191 for a free education session.

We teach PD too. We will not steer you to the machine just because this page exists. The right therapy is the one you can live with.

How home hemodialysis works

Hemodialysis cleans your blood through a filter (a dialyzer) on a machine. In a clinic, that usually means a chair, a set shift, and three trips a week. At home, the machine is yours to use in a space you set up, on days and times you and the team agree on.

Treatments at home are often shorter and more frequent than a standard in-center shift, or they can be scheduled overnight. What "often" means for you is individual. We do not pick a prescription off a poster.

You still need vascular access: an AV fistula, an AV graft, or, in some cases, a catheter. If you do not have access yet, we work with your preferred surgeon to get it placed.

Some people treat with a partner. Some people are screened for solo HHD. That screening is a real conversation about safety, not a slogan.

HHD compared with PD, in brief

  • PD uses the lining of your abdomen and a PD catheter. Many people cycle overnight (APD) or do manual exchanges in the day (CAPD). No hemodialysis machine.

  • HHD uses a hemodialysis machine and vascular access. It looks more like "clinic dialysis," except the clinic is your spare room and the clock is yours.

Both are home dialysis. Both are what Sundance does. Training, supplies, nursing, dietitian support, and social work come with either path. Your nephrologist stays in the picture.

Who HHD may fit

HHD may be worth a close look if you:

  • Want hemodialysis, but not a three-times-a-week clinic shift

  • Have (or can get) vascular access

  • Can learn the machine and the safety steps, with or without a partner

  • Have room for the machine and supplies, and a plan for water / setup that our team can work with

  • Care about recovering time in your week for work, family, or rest

It may not be the first choice if your housing, hands, vision, or support cannot be made safe enough. That is a clinical call, not a personality test. Come to an education session and say what your days actually look like.

Nurses train you until you are comfortable. Family can sit in. A home visit is part of sending therapy home with you. After that, you still belong to a clinic team. You are not a login at a national call center.

Keep your kidney doctor. We coordinate. Transplant planning, if that is your path, is coordinated with the programs listed on our refer page: Baylor Scott & White All Saints, Medical City Fort Worth, Texas Health Harris Methodist, and UT Southwestern.

A few direct answers

Is this the same as in-center hemodialysis? Same idea (machine, filter, access). Different place, different schedule, different training. You are doing the treatment, with backup from us.

Do I have to choose HHD vs PD today? No. The education session is for learning both.

What if I am already on in-center hemodialysis? You can still ask about coming home. Bring it up with your nephrologist, or call us and we will talk through the next step.
