Is Home Dialysis Right for Me?
Many people assume home dialysis is only for “certain” patients. In reality, a wide range of people can do well at home—with the right training and support.
Home dialysis may be a good fit if you:
• Want more control over your schedule
• Prefer treatment at home instead of three fixed clinic days each week
• Are willing to learn a routine with nurse-led training
• Have (or can arrange) a reasonably clean space for supplies and treatment
• Want to stay active with work, family, or travel when possible
You may still qualify even if:
• Someone told you “no” in the past
• You live alone (many people do home dialysis with a backup plan)
• You’re unsure which type—peritoneal dialysis (PD) or home hemodialysis (HHD)—is better
Home dialysis may not be the first choice if you:
• Prefer all treatment done by clinic staff every session
• Have housing or support limits that make home therapy unsafe for now
• Have a medical situation your care team feels is better managed in-center first
The only way to know for sure is a conversation—not a guess online.
